Explanation for the term Schema

I need a simple explanation of the "schema" in English, as in the database schema and XML schema.

EDIT: When someone says create a database schema, does that mean creating constraints on the fields in the tables?

The physical scheme of the database tells the viewer which pieces of information are physically close to each other (and therefore it is interesting to request “at a time”), which indices exist on the registered information (and therefore the selection criteria are very interesting to apply if we want to get fast answers) etc. etc.

All this without a database that needs to be built or without it should be available for viewing the model.
