A way to determine if options inside IE of choice are not suitable

Question

In IE6 and possibly 7, if you set the width of the character a to any other value, and then automatically, if the parameters inside this selection are wider, then the width of the selection will be disabled. This is bad. Firefox is smart enough not to.

Question: How can I determine if options are disabled using javascript?

How did you deal with this problem and then set the width to auto?
