PHP mailing list search (not for newsletters)

I am not sure if I correctly call it the correct name, what I would like to find (if it exists) is a group mailing list (e.g. mailman), but in php.

Here is what I expect from this:

Allow users to send emails mailinglist@domain.com with a subject like TEAM123 - Deadline is 11/30/2011(or maybe just team123@domain.com ) and this application will check the mailbox

He will check the mailbox and forward this message to all users in TEAM123. Thus, the email flow will be created.

Then users will be notified in TEAM123, and, responding, will update the mail flow (emails are then sent out to everyone again). Maybe at this moment the application will update the current conversation on the site (save it to DB? Etc.).

I think that I am calling the process correctly "mailing list service", etc.

Does anyone know anything like this in PHP? I would use this for a sports league, players would just need to update by email, and the whole team would be updated.

Thanks! Appreciate any ideas about this ...

PHP will not be an ideal platform for such an application, because in order to constantly check the mailbox and take action, it is required that a specialized SMTP server accept incoming emails or some kind of cron job on the server side. Although theoretically this could be done in PHP, it is more suitable for web development and is run by a web server.
