Is a slot machine better for software development?
NO.
CPU For software development, you need a lot of cores. For games, you need fast, but not necessarily a lot of cores. This changes slowly as newer games are recorded to take advantage of multi-core processors, but in general, most slot machines focus on the raw processor power. For example, in my case, I am a RoR developer, and during development I run: my editor, mongrel, solr, postgresql and memcached. In most cases, I also have an open browser, a PDF editor, and iTunes.
