AIML pattern matching - howto?

I had a problem trying to understand how AIML pattern matching works. What is the difference between _and *? And how should I use them to get the best fit?

I only have this document , but it does not have good examples.

A * will match anything unless a pattern of a word or several words is matched

A _ will match any, even if the pattern of a word or several words can match

<pattern>BYE _</pattern> , <pattern>BYE *</pattern> , <pattern>BYE _</pattern> <pattern>BYE * SEE YOU</pattern>, BYE * .

_ , _ , .

<pattern>_ A COUPLE OF WORDS *</pattern> <pattern>_ A COUPLE OF WORDS</pattern> - _, . .

_ * - , , .

_ should be used before the word or phrase you're matching on
* should be used after the word or phrase you're matching on.
