Gift Card / Debit Card Activation

a common problem

How do retailers hinder the activation of gift cards or prepaid phone / debit cards?

They must have a system that does not allow you to call in order to activate cards that have not been verified through the register, and I assume that there should be a standard solution in retail ERP / accounting systems. This is probably due to web services or EDI.

Specific problem

I ask for all this because one of my customers wants me to develop the product you got into by buying a $ 30 card at a retail store. There is a unique number on the map. Once you have purchased a card and activated it through the website, coupons for restaurants, etc. Periodically sent to you by email.

However, if someone had to steal a bunch of cards or figure out the numbering sequence, we don’t want the cards to work.

This is presumably a problem because retailers do this with the products above (prepaid calling cards, etc.).

I can think of several ways to solve this problem, but I need to provide the β€œstandard” solution that retailers expect, so that the product will work fine in its infrastructure.

Thanks a lot!

I learned from other sources that there are about eight card processing services that integrate with various retail outlets.

I know that Intuit Quickbooks Point of Sale offers such a service (complete with API), you can watch them.

I like the HalfBrain solution. I also assume that they have certain security considerations, such as a single IP address (or some other criteria) with a lot of failed activation attempts that may be flagged, apparently trying to examine the system.
