How do you know to use Container.DataItem when data binding in ASP.NET? Is there a link?

Is there a link for data binding? I saw many different ways to transfer data, but I never found links. There is one?

I know there are Bind and Eval, but when does Container.DataItem come into play? Are there other "hidden" objects and methods? Or a Container.DataItem object that is used here?
