Choose MySQL or choose SQL Server Express (free)?

I need to develop a medium-sized Inernet website (for example, less than 1,000 users) to share information and a simple workflow. With budget constraints, I choose a free database. And since developers are familiar with .Net, C # / ASP.Net is the chosen programming language. I am using Windows Server 2008 x64 as the OS.

I want to know the pros and cons of using MySQL or SQL Server Express in my situation (free)? I think the conclusion may differ from different people / perspectives, but studying the facts (pros and cons) will be useful for me to make a decision.

thanks in advance George

If SQL Server Express satisfies your needs without running its limitations, and your developers / admins are best acquainted with MS SQL, then use it.

Otherwise use MySQL.

In these situations, a comprehensive strategy usually uses what you know as long as it meets your technical needs.

Limitations of SQL Server Express:

  • Limited to one processor at a time (although it can use all the cores of a multi-core processor)
  • Can use a maximum of 1 GB of RAM to buffer data.
  • Maximum database data size 4 GB (10 GB in 2012)
  • SQL Profiler is not included (but can be used with inexpensive publisher tools)
  • No Work Planning (IIRC)
  • Import / Export Not Provided (IIRC)
