Modeling and synthetic video generation for evaluating computer vision algorithms

I am looking for an easy way to generate synthetic videos for testing computer vision software.

Currently, I only know one tool that targets this need: ObjectVideo Virtual Video (OVVV) . This is a HalfLife 2 mod that allows you to simulate cameras in a virtual world.

But I'm looking for a more open (as in open source) and possibly a portable solution. One way is to implement the necessary features on top of one of a dozen open source 3D engines. Although it would be great if someone knew a library or tool that already implements something like OVVV.

In addition, if you do not have a ready-to-use solution: how would you solve the problem?

PS: The reason I ask here is because I want to minimize my efforts spent on this problem. It is not that I had no idea how to do this. But my decisions would require me to invest a lot of time in this. So I'm looking for specific advice here ... :-)
