Good JSP framework for aspiring JSP developer

Question

I started looking at JSP yesterday, and the question I asked a friend was this:

"Isn't there something like an online guide for JSP? Something like php.net"

He replied: “This is not because you are expected to use the framework if you are encoding JSP,” and then recommended starting with Struts (referring to it having better documentation than Spring).

Put aside, and considering my small background in the development of J2SE, what framework can you recommend and why (note, I have no experience in developing JSPs, and until yesterday the only programming language that I know is PHP).
