Is there a way to generate a dendrogram where each level of the graph represents a generation and only the sons of the same father are connected at each level?
I am trying to use the R hclust and plot functions to generate a father-son line dendrogram. The desired result is a dendrogram, where each generation of sons is placed in one line under his father.
I was hoping that the hclust and the “full” method would allow me to use the dissimilarity matrix to assign the sons of the same father a dissimilarity score of 0, and then be placed on the same hierarchical level, excluding any other entities in the dataset. It does not work, on the same level there are sons of different generations.
Any help is much appreciated!
Here are some sample data:
father, son
A, C
A, D
A, E
B, F
B, G
C, H
C, i
F, J
F, K
G, L
Agent A consists of three sons: C, D, and E; and two grandchildren through C: H and I.
Agent B consists of two sons: F and G; and a total of three grandchildren: J, K and L.
