Debugging and killing applications on Mac OS X?

Hi everyone, I'm in the process of debugging a C ++ application on mac os 10.5. Sometimes I will do something bad and cause a segfault or illegal operation. This leads to the appearance of the application for some time, and ultimately the system dialog notifies me of an accident. The waiting time between “freezing” and dialogue is significant; A couple of minutes. If I try to force to exit the application or kill -9, then nothing will happen from the command line. If I run the application from the debugger (gdb), after the failure, I will return to the gdb prompt and can complete the process. This is not ideal, although gdb is loading slowly.

Anyway, can you guys recommend something? Is there a way to disable crash reporting in OS X?

Thanks.

Update 1 : Here are the zombies left over after executing Xcode. Apparently, xcode also cannot stop them.
