In SO, I searched for "identify version of visual studio", but could not find the answer.
Scenario:
A common best practice is to install all service packs associated with the software used.
This applies to Visual Studio 2008. In some cases, it is absolutely necessary, for example, VS2008 SP1 is required if you want to install RTM ASP.NET MVC v1.0.
For most programs, Help, About ____ will show the version and often include the SP level.
With my VS2008, I get a lot of information, some of which are clear:
