Why are 24 bits recorded?

In my work, I deal with various microcontrollers, microprocessors and DSP processors. Many of them have 24-bit registers and counters.

I know how to use them, this is not my question.

My question is why they have a 24-bit register! why not make it 32 bit? and, as I know, this is not a size problem, because the registers are already 32 bits, but have a maximum of 0xFFFFFF.

Does this facilitate the implementation of HW? Faster calculations? Or is it just "hmmm, let's set up 24-bit registers to complicate the work of programmers"?
