Why is jQuery called jQuery? What is the name of the cause?

I know j in jQuery means JavaScript, but what about a query in jQuery ? What does it mean?

John Resig answered someone claiming to be "jQuery" for the project already:

I originally intended to use JSelect, but all domain names have already been accepted. Then I did a search before I decided to name the jQuery project, saw your project, and also saw that it has not been updated since October 26, 2004: JQuery 3.1.3. So, I suggested that this no longer works.

I assume this is due to the fact that it is often used to query the DOM, using selectors, etc.
