Open source gravitational-like implementations?

I already use gravatar badges for users of my web service. However, I find several problems with this approach:

  • Only a small percentage of users spend time creating a gravatar profile. My users are not tech savvy, but will likely add a highlighted photo to my site.
  • My service users are encouraged to use images that display them in the appropriate form for the industry to which my service belongs. They would not want the same picture to be used for personal purposes on the Internet.
  • They would not have spent the time or effort managing a separate email address and gravatar account in order to have only a “standard” profile picture for my service.

Before implementing my own profile picture function, I was wondering if there are any open source solutions that I could use with similar functions for gravatar. In particular:

  • The ability to display thumbnails of any size (up to 512 pixels will be fine)
  • takes on caching thumbnails of various sizes.
  • It supports something like identifiers, preferably connected to various style algorithms (monsters, etc.), even better if I can customize these
  • Possibility to return to gravity if photo not found

Is there anything similar? I have not found it, if so.
