Adding a search for a private website

Question

I have a password protected site. This is an internal application, and it is not accessible to the general public, therefore it is not indexed by any search engine.

My application is developed by Google App Engine.

I would like to add a search engine, but obviously without having to publish its index. Is there any solution available from Google / Bing / Others for this situation?

Have you done this before? What solution did you choose and what are your results?
