How does PHP literature work?

I am interested in literature (articles on the Internet, in magazines, books, podcasts - I really have nothing against it), describing how PHP works inside, about its errors and, possibly, some additional functions. Is there anything similar? I tried to search on Google, but most of the articles were about getting started with PHP and its basic functions.

Any input is really welcome, as I try to understand the language within myself - I'm tired of my senseless typing of code, not understanding its essence.

The "PHP Reference" section contains the "PHP at the core: a hacker guide for Zend Engine" section.
