I want to use EtherPad (or a clone). My site runs Ruby on Rails. API or local installation?

I would like to use the etherpad interface on my website. Two questions:

1) Is there a site with etherpad api that I could just call remotely? 2) if not, how difficult is it to install scala and run both launches at the same time?

thank
