URL Slugs: Redirects or 404s?

Some sites, like here in SO, allow "dummy" bullets in the URL. Before implementing URL pools on my site, I have a question about "best practices" ...

For a structure such as example.com/123/article-slug-here/if my site allows fictitious slugs by requesting an identifier -

Should I...

  • just redirects to the corresponding / canonical URL (checking the slug and redirecting in case of non-compliance)?

-or-

  • returns 404, since technically example.com/123/this-article-s-u-xdoes not exist?

None. Leave it as it is. Google will determine the canonical url and store them in its index.

P.S. . - , ( ) Google URL-, . .
