WebSphere Application Server 6.1 support for Java 1.6?

Can I use Java 1.6 with WebSphere Application Server 6.1? The IBM website says no .

But I need Java 1.6 to deploy the software application, and I can’t upgrade it to Websphere 7.0 or use another application server right now (WAS 6.1 is the org standard).

what are my options?

No one can stop you from running WAS 6.1 with Java 6, but this configuration is NOT SUPPORTED by IBM and, according to this thread , I’m not even sure that you can start WAS.
