How to add my program to the OS X menu bar?

I created a volume controller for iTunes, but I would like this application to place an icon in the OS X system tray and drop out of my slider controller.

Typically, you create a faceless background application by setting the key LSUIElementin the Info.plist file on YESand create a status element at startup.
