Are there things like Email Hooks?

Upon learning about git hook fixing, I thought maybe there are things like email hooks ...

Is it possible for me to create a program that says: "Hey, you just got an email, now run this ruby script"? Something like GMail Web Hook. Is there anything like that? I mean, I could create a cron thing that checked my email all the time, but maybe there is a more formal way.

Looking for an online email system to do this, not tell my Mac Mail.

You can try smtp2web . It basically consists of an SMTP daemon that displays incoming email at HTTP addresses. You can then run the server side code of your choice at these URLs. This is just one way to approach the problem. It is designed specifically for use with the Google App Engine.

You can either start your own instance, or simply register for a match (for example, viatropos@smtp2web.com http://viatropos.com ) and forward your Gmail account to this. Then you start the http server at viatropos.com.

EDIT: I also found Astrotrain , which is similar but written in Ruby.
