Checking Internationalized URLs - Will it be a Problem?

After reading the new Arabic URLs and with the advent of more languages, how should URL checking be done for internationalized applications? Does validation change at all and will existing solutions break? Is regex still a good approach? If so, what will this regular expression look like? If not, what is a good strategy? What are some good resources to learn more about the topic?

I ask about this because it can lead to many localized applications having to be rewritten if they have to check URLs anywhere.

• RFC 3492: Internationalized Application Domain Names (IDNA)
• Updated project that will modify / update RFC 3492 for this last change
• IDNA Working Group Homepage on IETF

Since this is a completely new thing, I cannot find a good solid link on how to do this (if you can reliably do this), but I could find many potential starting points so that I can do this CW so that people can update if they find more relevant information.
