Installed Programs / Computer Information for Web Application

I am currently developing a support system for the university. The system is written in PHP, and I would like to receive the current list of software and basic computer information on the computer. Basically, when one of the teachers or staff creates a ticket from our web interface, I would like to have a Java applet or similar that can be launched and will return the information to the PHP script help desk. Does something like this exist?

There are many programs that do such things. Googling for "CMDB" should give you a reasonable start - a couple of them are open source, although others are not even close to free ones (for example, BMC Atrium ).

To bring the situation closer to the current ones (i.e., related to programming), one of the main structures of this situation is called Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM). On Windows, this is implemented as WMI . There are several implementations on Linux, including OpenWBEM and HP WBEM .
