Real-time soft shadows without stencil buffers

I'm really curious how to do this

They seem to achieve soft real-time shadows on an iphone that does not have an available stencil buffer. It seems pretty fluid here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5OM6tPoxLU

Does anyone have an idea?
