Any tips on how to build an LED system will be covered in music?

So in principle, I would like to say somehow that for audio files as input (most likely for mp3 or I can use some audio module that will process other types) from my computer to control some LEDs so that they were a bit like an oscilloscope, like in winamp.

What do I need to be able to do this? I am interested in building things on my own, coding, hardware, etc.

I am going with C ++ on Windows.
