How can I update an APK version that I myself did not create

I am new to Android development. I use the x-platform development tool, which builds and signs the APK for me. This tool has an error, and it does not generate an APK with the specified version code, all created APKs have version 1.0.

I would like to unzip the APK, edit the version code, and then resign and repack it. It was signed using my keystore initially, so I have the keys needed to sign it.

How can I do that?

It should be possible; I previously changed the existing name of the APK package without access to the source.

Not if it is signed.

Only the owner of the key can modify the contents of .apk.
