It's not clear that "type 5" is actually an official term, and not just something that DataDirect came up with . Every article I can find about them seems to be written or related to DataDirect.
So, you may ask if the DataDirect "type 5" driver is faster than the DataDirect type 4 driver for any particular database ... but apart from that, the question doesn't make much sense at the moment.
