Application Life in ASP.NET

This should be a simple question, but I could not find the answer on google.

I would like to know, from the point of view, an idiot can understand exactly what the life time of an application means in ASP.NET (and, therefore, when you can expect the applications to start and finish).

I assumed that this will happen when you start and stop the application in IIS, but I read things that suggest that this is related to the number of requests.

By default, the lifetime begins with the first application request. And it ends after a downtime timeout.
