Pre-built login / authentication component for php application?

I know that this question was asked before, but I did not find answers that seem ideal.

I have a php application that requires a login system. I am not a specialist in cryptography, and I am afraid to invent a wheel that has undoubtedly been invented many times, and very well.

I am wondering if anyone knows of a good authentication component that can be easily integrated into an existing script that adheres to all best practices and which, combined with the ssl login, satisfies all reasonable requirements for being secure.

I would prefer a standalone component, as opposed to having to customize the entire structure of some type. (For the rest, the application does not use the framework, and I do not like the idea of ​​using it, just for auth.)

Why not use LDAP ?, it is standard, secure and fairly simple.
