Does Raphael use canvas or svg?

I was looking for a good vector solution and heard well about Raphael. But in all his documents, he talks about identifying the canvases that have just embarrassed me.

Is Raphaël a canvas or an SVG library?

To facilitate cross-browser support, Raphael uses VML and SVG.

When raphael says canvas, this is its own terminology, and it does not refer to HTML5 canvas. This is a layer on top of SVG.
