C ++ main only uses ~ 20% of the time, gprof says

I tried profiling my C ++ program with gprof. The program itself worked for about 53 seconds, so I do not understand why it says that the main work lasted about 8.29 seconds. Any explanation on this?

Here is an excerpt:

index % time self children called name

Did you print the results on the console? gprof does not account for locked time. Watch this.
