my robotics lab is looking for programmers to work on some of the projects that we have at the moment.
We nailed the requirements (mainly C ++ and experience with openGL and 3D), but due to the obvious limitations of money, we cannot afford to hire Great Developers. Instead, we are going to settle for talented students by offering them projects for their dissertation / dissertation and hoping for some fresh ideas and creativity on their part. We can also pay students who have just graduated (first work experience).
So my question is:
In your experience, as you noticed a talented student (computer engineer or engineer)? What questions did you ask? What else helped you find a candidate who turned out to be a good programmer? (note: they may not know much about a particular language, but may be able to learn pretty quickly)
or, if you were an interlocutor,
What questions were asked for you to jump on the bandwagon? Or, if you had terrible experience, what - in retrospect - was an obvious warning signal that you ignored?
Please note that I am not looking for an argumentative answer. We can talk all day about what is best for us and never agree.
