Sample code, what can I write to impress the employer?

I am not a very creative guy. Often, employers ask me to write a code and send it from CV. I know this mainly to check what my code looks like, but I also think it matters what it is. Do you have any suggestions?

* This question is related to programming. Imagine that you are the person who checks the code attached to the CV, and tell me, please, what do you want to see?

I would suggest not writing something new, but finding a piece of code that you wrote earlier to show where you are proud.
