Maven - how / where to publish artifacts

I have my own projects. I would like to publish artifacts in a common place. If I don’t need to host my own repository, that would be ideal, otherwise I would have to configure my own copy of Nexus (or another repository that you recommend).

Can I publish artifacts to Maven Central? What process do I need to complete to get them there?
