How does Silverlight work?

Can someone please give me a link with a detailed description of how Silverlight works. I mean, does it start as a separate process or works in the same process as the browser? Is the Silverlight plugin responsible for parsing XAML and rendering Silverlight in the same address space as the browser? Basically, more detailed information on how Silverlight code is accurately analyzed and visualized, and the process that cares about it, and where does this process run?

TIA
