Is there a good way to display too much information in ASP.NET?

I am in a difficult situation and I think I know this solution, but I would like to ask about it. I have an ASP.NET page (C # 2.0 framework) on a site that is used as a search. Standard grid control, 5 columns of data, a hyperlink for the 6th column to do something with the record that the user wants to select.

My question is how best to display the “possible” 100 thousand records in this gridview? As he stands right now, I will sprout some more gray hair before he returns the result. Gridview, for its realestate, can display about 20 rows of data on the screen at a time, so data paging still gives me 5,000 pages. Adding to the search type rolodex on AZ the largest set of return values on 'J' gives me 35,000 entries (where, alas, "X" is only 54).

Am I just breaking rolodex less or is there a better way to handle this?

early!

edit: I already have a stored procedure that fills this swap setting, for example, GenericTypeTea, again, even with paging on "J", which will give me 1750 pages. The reason I have so much data is because the number of participants in this auto policy. The administrator should be able to search for a specific name or partial. Jones has 1209 entries and Smith has 2918, so even this does a set of retouching results.

edit # 2: added “possible” 100 thousand, there is no guarantee that the account will have so many entries, on the other hand, it can have more: (

It seems to me that adding search capabilities will be more effective than filtering or paging.
