Why use an IDE?

This may be too self-confident, but I'm trying to understand why some companies provide a mandate to use the IDE. In college, all I used was vim, although sometimes I used netbeans for use with Java. Netbeans was enjoyable because it executed the code completion and had some good templates for setting up some of the other services that I tried.

Now that my friends work in large companies, they tell me that they should use an eclipse or visual studio, but no one can seem a reason for what.

Can someone explain to me why companies force their developers into limited development environments?

Now using Eclipse is optional in our store! A few years ago, some people used the Delphi IDE (forgot their name), I tried NetBeans, etc. But I think we de facto standardized Eclipse, but it was a natural evolution, not a company policy. And we often just open the files in a text editor when we need a quick update ...
