Track inbound site links by link in a pdf file?

I recently posted an ad in a weekly publication that sends a PDF file. My ad is directly related so that the reader can click on it and go to my site. The PDF file is hosted on another server, but is, in fact, a PDF file that you must download and view on this site, not by email or share this path. I have Google Analytics and a few other statistics tracking programs, and I don’t see the link URLs from this other site at all. Is there something I can ask a PDF designer to include in her links to make them trackable? Or is it simply impossible?

Use Google Analytics campaign tags.

This tool will help you configure it. You will want to classify the variables so that the source and environment are set, at a minimum.

So, for example, if your URL is http://example.com , you can set parameters like:

utm_source: BlahNews utm_medium: utm_campaign newsletter: july10issue

As a result, your URL will be http://example.com/?utm_source=BlahNews&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=july10issue

Google Analytics will track these impressions for this campaign, source, and environment.

http://example.com/blahnews TO http://example.com/?utm_source=BlahNews&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=july10issue
