Web Services: Safe? Asp.net

What I can't wrap are secure web services.

For example, we are writing a desktop application that will interact with data on one of our websites, as well as with local data. This data is sensitive, and the last thing we want is anyone who calls web services.

I have not yet found anything that says that web services have their own authentication methods, and the only security that I talked about is the use of certificates to encrypt the message.

I am not a guru on this and I would be grateful for the entry and, possibly, a link to explain this in simple words.
