Hidden field as an alternative to (re) CAPTCHA in an ASP.NET MVC2 application

I am writing a "contact us" form in a web project that I am currently associated with. Although I used reCAPTCHA in the past, for this project I would prefer not to clutter up the interface with additional images, fields, etc.

How much experience have you had in adding a hidden field named "first_name" to your form. The idea was that if the field was not , then the applicant would most likely be a man. But then I ask if the bot checked whether the field was hidden or not?
