What is the meaning of scaffolding?

I do not understand the meaning of something like rails, coderigrin, etc. and forests. From what I read, and maybe it's just wrong, scaffolding is not used in a production environment. I don’t know what it is for. This is neat, but I do not know what I should do with it.

You use Scaffolding to get some results with ease, such as quickly knocking out an early protoip or getting functionality like CRUD. Typically, code created using scaffolding is a crutch that you must replace or extend later with something more complex.

Great to see how you are going to use the application. I like to run scaffold in a test application to see how the default case is handled. Gordon is right, however, that he bears future service time.
