The short answer is: expand what you expand.
Long answer: good Rails containers, such as Unicorn, Thin, etc., do not really affect your development, but they will affect production. And each of them has only configuration-related quirks that interact with your code and select gems that just dive and work in this environment can save a lot of time, even if you use continuous integration, but especially if not.
