Conceptual issue of iPhone 2d game. Quartz? Cocos2d? Chipmunk? Box2D?

I am new to iPhone dev and would like to write a game involving 2d collisions. Will someone give me a conceptual overview of how different structures interact in a typical 2nd collision game?

The candidates I mentioned so far are 2d packages like quartz and cocos2d, and physical engines like chipmunk and box2d. What I'm not completely clear is the relationship between them in my context.
