Is it possible for an Android application to automatically install and run the update?

I have an application installed on phones sitting in locked drawers in different states. It works 24/7 and practically does not interact with the user.

I know how to push updates to the market ... Can I start a thread in my application that sees the application update, install apk and open a new apk, replacing its current version?

There should be no problems with 2.2, you cannot do this with 2.1 or earlier versions. You do not even need to run the thread, you can let the market developer handle this for you. You just need to first configure the application to automatically update. And as kcoppock said, you cannot change permissions.
