Vertical alignment with base and text fields

Question

I am trying to get a label aligned with the baseline of the first line of text in the text area.

Naive attempt:

<div style="vertical-align: baseline; display: inline-block">
   <label for="comments">Comments:</label>
</div>
<div style="vertical-align: baseline; display: inline-block">
   <textarea name="comments" id="comments"></textarea>
</div>

aligns the label with the bottom of the text area. I would prefer it to line up the first area.
