If you used the Google Maps web application on your iphone or ipad, you know what I'm talking about. You cannot see my fingers in this screen capture, but this is the average press (if you) zoom in. The detailed area was the initial viewing area of the map, and the blurry bit outside is an additional map that appeared in the middle of the pinch.

The pinch-to-zoom function, using touch input of gestures, scales the map at the moment in real time so that it looks like magic. We are trying to scale images and reproduce this smooth zoom. Does anyone know how they do this?
