Remote Development / Tools

I am looking for some tips on distance development / programming and any tips people are currently doing with this. I am specifically looking for what, in your opinion, is the most effective practice or set of practices.

I think the following is important:

  • View code remotely with a tool like Crucible *
  • A good connection for accessing SVN, an error tracking tool (e.g. Jira) and a wiki (e.g. Confluence) for sharing progress / design, etc.
  • When calling every morning for "daily standing"
  • Keep a daily diary of affairs / things.
  • Using IM client for quick messaging

Does anyone have recommendations on other practices / changes that you would recommend?

  • Software that helps people discuss and bring ideas together. Consider something on scriblink .
  • In addition, I would suggest good software that allows you to remotely register with other machine developers - on the Internet. It makes life a lot easier, especially when discussing / troubleshooting problems that you can actually see in real time exactly what they are looking at

It is generally recommended that you create a separate account for your "company person", for example JoeCoder_CompanyName @Yahoo.
