Grid display on iPad doesn't appear - why?

I installed the iPhone app on the iPad. When I click this "2x" button, the application becomes scaled, but it does not use the retina display graphics. Isn't that so stupid? I'm sure I did something wrong!

What should I set in info.plist or elsewhere that the iPad will use my retina display graphics when the application is viewed in 2x mode?

No, it literally just scales the screen. It may be a little lame, but by design. Note that even text is doubled in pixels.
